Home Trends and Design Is Dedicated to Protecting the Environment

HTD believes in sustainability and protecting the environment - take our mango wood collections for example. Mangos are a top agricultural crop in much of south-east Asia. India’s harvest alone represents the majority of all mangos grown for human consumption in the east. Each year Mango plantations replant new trees continuing the cyclical process of renewing and harvesting. When the mango tree becomes mature and no longer able to bear fruit, the trees are harvested for timber. New trees are then planted in place, carrying on the annual cycle of planting and harvesting, creating the basis for sustainability and ecological balance.

Furniture the Eco-Friendly Way

Most furniture from India is made from exotic hardwoods such as teak or rosewood, both slow-growing species from tropical rain forest regions. After continuous harvesting with very little re-planting, these once majestic forests have diminished to a tiny remnant of what they once were, and continue to decline at alarming rates. Destruction of the rain-forest is a key contributor to global warming affecting our entire eco-system.

Since these are non-fruit bearing trees, there is no redeeming agricultural crop to promote re-planting. With mango wood, the value extends beyond just the lumber, since mango's are a key food and cash crop for many south Asian economies. While governments make an effort to protect their endangered rain forests, mango trees have this built-in renewability, as they must be replanted.

Capture the Beauty of the Wood Grain

Using solid hardwood to make furniture is a complicated process and requires expert knowledge of the materials and techniques required. But the end result can be truly inspiring – an heirloom grade piece that will last for decades if not centuries. As the pioneer in eco-friendly mango furniture, HTD has developed new processes and finishes specifically for mango wood to ensure that each HTD piece will serve beautifully for decades to come.

Eco-Friendly Water Based Lacquer

In addition to using plantation wood, Home Trends and Design also uses water based finishes, which are safer for workers in factories and more environmentally friendly. Water based finishes offer a safe and elegant alternative to solvents and petroleum based lacquers. At Home Trends and Design we increase durability by applying 2 coats of sealer and then the stain and lacquer as a result the tops are moisture resistant for daily use and easy care. With the clarity of the finish, all of the natural beauty of the wood-grains and natural features come uniquely alive.

Construction Ensures Lasting Use

Age old construction methods such as mortise and tenon joinery and dovetailed drawers ensure the durability of each HTD product. Each piece is crafted completely by hand, enhancing the individual character of the item. This is not your average mass-produced product made from particle board as seen in most furniture stores today. Get the original – Solid Hardwood instant heirlooms from HTD.
